Whale sharks!! Who doesn’t want to swim with whale sharks, especially when there are loads of them to see in a deserted bay and national park deep into the reaches of the Sea of Cortez. Bahia de Los Angles is a very special place with up to 220 friendly and curious whale sharks visiting every season and is best accessed by a liveaboard expedition ship. Friendly and curious whale sharks?? Yes indeed. There are so few boats around that these whale sharks behave very differently around humans than in any other place. So break out the good china and sign up for a trip, joining us for a superb 8 or 10 day Ultimate Whale summer expedition.

This adventure combines some of the best diving in the Sea of Cortez supported by our spotter airplane with a large seasonal gathering of whale sharks in a deserted bay in the middle of nowhere. This summer gathering of whale sharks is legendary in Baja. Between 80 and 220 whale sharks have been identified during May to October. Bonus is all the other big critters in the Sea of Cortez this time of year. We will be keeping a sharp lookout for orcas, pilot whales, sperm whales and finback whales, as well as going ashore on a desert island with the largest population of blue-footed boobies in the world.

Typical Itinerary
Fly into Los Cabos (SJD). While it’s easy to fly into SJD on the same day that you are boarding your ship, we encourage you to come in a day or two early and take advantage of some extra diving. Perhaps warming up with a local 2 tanker, taking a nitrox course or maybe enjoying the more challenging diving at Gordo Banks or a day trip to Cabo Pulmo. Our concierge team will happily assist with finding you the best deal on local hotels.

Day 1 – Boarding Day!
Please check in at SeeCreatures Cabo by 4:30 pm at the latest for your coach transfer to La Paz. Our hosties will be waiting on the back deck for you with silver trays of chilled champagne. Dinner onboard and we will be getting underway for the start of your adventure.

The Sea of Cortez!
Everyday will be different and your captain and dive guides will update your itinerary to maximize animal and diving encounters and minimize any challenges with weather. This is a great time of year to dive the Sea of Cortez with water temps in the high 70’s or 80’s. One of the nicest things about this time of year is that the seas are often very calm without any motion aboard our heavy steel stabilized ships. Our spotter airplane will be out scouting for big animals during your trip with fingers crossed on pilot, blue and sperm whales and hopefully even orcas.

Day 2
Las Animas. Sea lions and fingers crossed on hammerhead sharks.

Day 3
Isla San Ildefonso. Lovely diving north of Loreto.

Day 4
Isla San Pedro Martir. The jewel of the Sea of Cortez. Loads of sea lions, black coral, great diving. And the largest population of blue footed boobies in the world

Day 5
Bahia de Los Angeles. Whooohhoooo!! This is it. The dream. The ultimate destination for whale sharks and lots of them. We may have the bay entirely to ourselves with morning and afternoon swimming with these friendly whale sharks using local pangas and captains.

Day 6
Stopping back in a Isla San Pedro Martir because it’s a great dive site. And it’s special diving in such a remote place.

Day 7
At sea with spotter airplane support with special attention to our “secret hot spot” by Mulege. We usually encounter pilot whales and dolphins at the hot spot and sometimes sperm whales. And of course you are very welcome to jump in the water with them.

Day 8 – Last Day
8:00 am arrival in La Paz with complimentary transfers back to SJD or SeeCreatures Cabo. Or better yet, stay with us in La Paz for a bit longer and we will get you out on more local diving!

The southern Sea of Cortez offers good diving, seas that are usually flat calm, and by late July or August, great visibility and nice warm water. Expect to be engulfed by huge swirling tornadoes of schooling fish, interactive California sea lions, moray eels, all manner of rays, large pods of dolphins, and hopefully pilot whales. We will do our best to get you onto schooling hammerheads and even some wreck diving. We will likely explore Cerralvo, La Reyna, Espiritu Santo, Las Animas, and further north, often venturing into the Loreto National Park. Our spotter airplane will be out searching for orcas, great whales including sperm whales, mobula rays, and other big animals. These adventures meet in Cabo San Lucas, depart and return from La Paz with complimentary transfers back to either SJD or SeeCreatures Cabo.

Insider Tips: Seas are generally flat calm in the Sea of Cortez this time of year. visibility and water temps improve dramatically in July. By September you can expect water temps in the mid 80’s and visibility of 100 – 150 ft.

Sample Itinerary
Fly into SJD. Cabo.

Day 1
Meet at SeeCreatures San Jose del Cabo, coach transfer to La Paz

Days 2-7
Diving and having fun during the day and travelling in the evening or overnight to get to new dive sites. The speciality of this trip is exploring the loop from La Paz up to Loreto and back stopping in at our favourite “classic dive sites” as well as new sites that we have recently discovered. We are proactively exploring all the time and even after all these years, we are finding new dive sites. Your captain and dive guides will maximum the experience based on changing conditions and where the best animal sightings are.

Day 8
Breakfast and disembark by 08:30 am. Complimentary transfer back to SJD or Cabo SeaCreatures.

During Mid-October to December, a magical event happens in the nutrient rich swirling blue waters off Magdalena Bay where All sorts of predators gather to hunt on the second largest sardine run in the world. This thrilling underwater action is spectacular.

It’s hard not to feel sorry for the sardine but this is mother ocean at work. Yes, we are seeing striped marlin whizzing around and through the schools of fish at 50 kmh. But we are also seeing bryde and humpback whales gulping their way through the schools, we have discovered an area in which which momma and newborn humpbacks seem to gather, we are seeing some sharks, lots of sea lions, mahi mahi, seabirds and much more. In the nearby areas we are even seeing lots of turtles and mola mola (giant sun fish). It’s basically an intense riot of marine activity.

7 nights full liveaboard boarding in Cabo with a 15 hour sail up the coast of Baja for Magdalena Bay.

Typical Itinerary – Luxury Liveaboard – 8 Days, 7 Nights Via sea voyage.

Day 1
Meet at SeeCreatures Cabo for 4:30 pm. Board and set sail up the beautiful coast of Baja California. Our destination, the sheltered waters and outer Islands of Magdalena Bay sardine run.

Day 2
Begin with 3 dives south end of Margarita Island, including sea lions and the remains of a steamship that sunk in the early 1900’s.

Days 3 – 6
Let’s find some bait balls and get in the water with striped marlin! This is a cooperative eco-tourism program with local pangas and highly knowledgeable captains. Nobody does a better job at finding bait balls than Captain G and his family and friends. Spend as much or as little time as you want on the water each day. The more time, the more striped marlin encounters. Scuba diving is definitely on the agenda on this trip. Magdalena Bay is loaded with life this time of year, and aside from the marlin, you might also spot whales, dolphins, turtles, sharks and sea lions. Don’t forget to check out the mangroves and gorgeous sand dunes. We will have kayaks and SUPs ready for you.

Day 7
Last day at Magdalena Bay. End with 3 more dives including the wreck of a WW1 submarine and more sea lions!

Day 8
8:30am, enjoy one more breakfast before disembarking at SeeCreatures Cabo.

We love diving Socorro, especially in the spring and early summer. Socorro is always stunning, raw, and primal, offering fantastic diving experiences known for the super-friendly and interactive giant mantas. With 12 different species of sharks and playful bottlenose dolphins trying to outdo the mantas to see who can be the most playful with scuba divers. Despite being only 235 nautical miles from Cabo, it feels like being deep in the Pacific to a remote and unvisited paradise. You almost expect to see Game of Thrones dragons soaring out from behind the active volcano on Socorro. The archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a tightly guarded national park, accessible only to a limited number of permit holders.

What makes May and June our favourite dive season of the year is the abundance of animals. This is when we encounter loads of sharks, often on every dive, including schooling hammerheads and schooling silver tip sharks (not a misprint!), silkies and Galapagos sharks are very common as are white tip reef sharks stacked up like firewood as always at Roca Partida. Swimming through vast schools of thousands of jacks is amazing. This is the time of year when we see bait balls, pilot whales, and pelagic species, including giant tuna visit. There is more biomass, more fish, more animals and more life than at any other time of year.

Day 1
Our Nautilus-owned SeeCreatures is located downtown Cabo San Lucas, near the marina, and is your home away from home. We encourage you to fly in early and allow us to arrange for some local diving whether it’s Gordo Banks, Cabo Pulmo, or the La Paz whale sharks. Your trip includes a complimentary Backscatter lesson this morning. Our photo pros will coach you on how to get that perfect manta image, help set up or service, repair your camera gear and assist with camera rentals. You are welcome to drop your bags off and check in whenever it’s most convenient. We ask that you please be at SeeCreatures by 4 pm for the pre-boarding health check. After your health check, you may leave SeeCreatures and enjoy a nice dinner or evening walk. Please arrive back at SeeCreatures by 7:15 pm for the mandatory safety video before boarding the boat at 8 pm.

Day 2
Today is a traveling and relaxing day at sea. It is a one-day run out to the islands. An orientation briefing will be held in the morning, followed by a fire and boat safety drill. A drill? On holiday? Don’t worry, it is for your safety but we will make it lots of fun. We are proud to have been the first, and some of the only, ISM safety-certified passenger vessel dive boats in the world, the same safety certification as the largest cruise ships. We’ll keep you as busy as you like on this sea day with Manta 101 in the afternoon, then you will have a chance to prep your gear, read a book, relax on the sun deck or check out the movie selection on our onboard wifi. We will be watching for the “green flash” at sunset, and while the cocktail hour is officially at 7 pm every evening, many of our guests enjoy some adult beverages well before that on sea days! We should arrive at San Benedicto Island that evening allowing you a calm night to relax and get a restful sleep before the next morning’s excitement of diving with the friendliest giant mantas in the world.

Day 3-9
Over seven full dive days, you will be able to experience some of our favorite sites such as El Canyon, the Boiler, Red Rocks, Roca Partida, Cabo Pearse, Punta Tosca, and Roca Oneal. We know that many of our guests want the option of as many dives as possible and we strive to offer an average of 4 dives a day, other than the day that we do our mandatory check-in at the local navy base when you will likely have the option of 3 dives plus our world-famous silky shark night snorkel. Our roots are in the cold, current-swept waters of BC and Alaska and we have always catered to experienced self-reliant divers looking for complete freedom on their dives. These divers are usually first in the water. We love buddying up with new divers looking for the reassurance of being with a divemaster from the time they start gearing up until they are back on the big boat. Most divers are somewhere mid-spectrum between these 2 groups and we make sure they are very well looked after as well!

Note that several dives may be quite challenging and not suitable for divers of lower experience levels. The number of dives on offer is subject to weather, the whims of Mother Ocean, and crowding by other dive boats.

We will have other stuff going on to keep you as busy as you like with kayaks and paddleboards, shoreline tours, humpback whale watching (January to April), manta ID in the late afternoon, and after-dinner presentations. Of course, it’s always your option to find a nice quiet place to relax with a book, have a nice snooze, or maybe have a splash in our sparkling clear hot tubs.

Day 10
We will likely get underway very early this morning for the voyage back to Cabo San Lucas. This is the perfect day to check out photos and videos with the new friends you made on board, pack your dive gear up and take time to relax before reality sets back in. The islands, the mantas, the sharks, and the dolphins are almost “otherworldly” and we hope the magic stays with you for a long time.

Day 11
Always a sad time for us. It’s time to say goodbye and disembark the boat in Cabo at 8.30 am for either SJD airport or our dive center in Cabo San Lucas. It doesn’t have to be goodbye for long, we hope to see you again very soon.

Costa Rica Oceans and Rainforest Adventure: Caño Island diving plus Piedras Blancas and Osa Peninsula National Parks. This serves as the ideal pre or post-Cocos extension, seamlessly blending diving with several days of rainforest exploration led by your onboard naturalist. Following beach landings from the inflatables, you’ll be on the lookout for four different species of monkeys, flocks of scarlet macaws, sloths, toucans, frogs, snakes, and so much more.

Day 1: The Nautilus Explorer will be berthed in Marina Bahia Golfito. It’s beautiful. Boarding will begin after 6:30 pm, and we will sail by 8 pm to Corcovado National Park.

Day 2: Caño Island is an excellent visit and your trip starts out with a heavy day of diving or snorkelling, and kayaking. The island is a protected national park and it’s beautiful. In previous years there's been great luck with humpback whale encounters and divers saw hammerhead, white and black-tip reef sharks, mobula and cow nose rays, southern stingrays, moray eels, schooling barracuda, sea turtles, and loads and loads of fish along with coral reefs and a mix of pinnacles, walls, and drop-offs.

Day 3-5: For the next 3 days, you will be based out of Drake Bay and the Osa Peninsula, mixing it up with a combination of cool shore expeditions plus more diving, snorkelling, and kayaking. Nearby Corcovado National Park is one of the most pristine parks in Costa Rica, including beautiful deserted white sand beaches, old-growth forests, and the chance for rarely seen animals. It’s wet, rugged and remote.

It’s the only place in Costa Rica where you can see 4 different species of monkeys, including the highly endangered red-backed squirrel monkey. Your naturalist is amazing at spotting nearby critters, which might include wild pigs, tapirs, flocks of Scarlett macaw parrots, sloths, and crocodiles in the largest mangroves in Central America. While you won’t see them all, the park is home to 40 species of frogs, more than 100 species of butterflies, and over 375 species of birds, including 16 species of hummingbirds.

Going ashore is like being in a fantasy where you land on the beach by inflatable boat for a hike in the rainforest and waterfalls to emerge onto another beautiful sand beach with your crew waiting with drinks and snacks at the ready.

Day 6: Arrival back at the Golfito marina by 5 am for those catching the early morning Sansa flight. Early breakfast and 7 am departure for guests heading back to San Jose in our courtesy shuttle (to arrive SJO by 1 pm latest). Or a more leisurely 8:30 am disembarkation for this who are staying on in Golfito or heading off for another adventure in one of the nearby national parks.

The Boiler

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

"The Boiler" at San Benedicto is world-renowned for the up-close and personal encounters divers experience with the Giant Pacific manta ray. This pelagic, which is a relative of the shark, can grow to a wingspan of over twenty feet, yet they are gentle giants. Mantas commonly greet divers upon their arrival and stay as long as there are divers around.

Sharks are more the order of the day at The Canyon with healthy numbers of silky sharks, Galapagos sharks and hammerhead sharks being the most frequently sighted. While the silkies and Galapagos sharks may travel solo or in small groups, the hammerheads can be present in vast schools. Los IsLotes

Los Cabos, Mexico

This is the diving point, where you can 100 percent encounter sea lions. The big rock that sticks out from the ocean is where the colony of over 400 sea lions live. In addition to sea lions there are also unique fish you can expect to see.

At the south side of the rock, on the sand with a water depth about 46 to 60 ft, you can find giant Bluespotted Jawfish showing their faces from the sand. They have a fist-sized head. Also Mobula rays are sometimes passing by.

And you can expect other encounters of schools of migratory fish such as the Mexican Barracuda, when you come through the arch from south side to northeast side. Even whale sharks have been seen at this point!

During June and July, you can see the newborn sea lion babies on the rock.

It is very fun that young growing sea lions, which were born last year, go zipping around underwater surprising scuba divers. For your information, the newborn babies start playing with scuba divers underwater in the middle of September.

Their playroom is in the cave of the south side. They are so playful that they nibble divers’ fins and snorkels softly. Their big round eyes are very impressive. The babies are the most active during November to May.

Beside sea lions, this point is full of macro, such as Gobies and sea slugs. SARDINA (the school of sardines) is also one of the specialties here in Los Islotes.
