Route Options

West Coast Explorer (10 nights)
PERTH (Fremantle) – DAMPIER

Day One - The Houtman Abrolhos are a chain of 122 islands and associated coral reefs lying some eighty kilometres due west of Geraldton. Stretch your wings early and join a heli-flight featuring stunning reef formations and intriguing island communities. Or join a snorkelling tender - shallow inshore lagoons provide comfortable snorkelling midst colourful coral and a myriad of fish species. Curious sea lions frequently join in the fun.

Day Two - Go ashore at Beacon Island and see a remarkably preserved canon lying in shallow water. Visit Long Island.

Day Three - Join the adventure boats for a day of fishing, snorkelling and diving.
Nearby Fish Point has been known to produce coral trout in shallow water and we know some spots out- wide that are pretty reliable when it comes to fine eating species such as jewfish.
Fish Point and the Turtle Bay shallows are also perfect for an easy snorkel and dive sites in the area include "Planet Channel" and other spots that feature some excellent overhangs and caves.
Step ashore at West Wallaby Island for a glimpse of the reclusive tamar wallaby and join our guides for a scenic walk amongst the ruins of Wiebbe Hayes’ rudimentary 'forts'.

Day Four - Start the day with an exhilarating hike to Steep Point – the western most edge of the Australian continent.
Steep Point is part of the Shark Bay World Heritage area and is widely regarded as one of the finest land- based game fishing locations in the world.
South Passage is another hot-spot for those keen on fishing and hopefully the divers will see the giant gropers that frequent “Monkey Rock”.

Day Five - This morning the TRUE NORTH will cruise to Cape Inscription on the northern tip of Dirk Hartog Island. The fishing and snorkelling tenders will be away again and there will also be an opportunity for a dive on the western side of the Cape.

Day Six - Ningaloo Reef is one of West Australia’s most popular tourist destinations and as soon as you step onto one of its brilliant white beaches you will see why! Stunning fish and corals occur within metres of the shoreline - no special skills needed here - just a mask will reveal all in swimming pool like conditions!
The reef is 260 km long and is Australia’s largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass. The reef is less than half a kilometre offshore in some areas.
In 1987 the reef and surrounding waters were designated as a marine park. Although most famed for its whale sharks, the reef is also rich in coral and other marine life. The reef is included in the migratory routes of dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and humpback whales. The adjacent beaches are also important rookeries for loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles. They also depend on the reef for nesting and food. Ningaloo supports an abundance of fish (500 species), corals (300 species), molluscs (600 species) and many other marine invertebrate. In 2006, researchers discovered gardens of sponges that are thought to be species completely new to science.
The day will be spent discovering the many bays and shallow inner reef areas of this acclaimed coral habitat. We’ll also squeeze in some light game fishing for the tenacious mackerel and visit the settlement at Coral Bay.

Day Seven - Wake this morning somewhere completely different - the intriguing Montebello Islands.
The Montes are an archipelago of 174 small islands lying 130 kilometres off the Pilbara coast of north- western Australia.

Day Eight - The ship’s helicopter will again provide a unique perspective whilst the snorkellers and divers hunt for giant crayfish.
After lunch perhaps there will be an opportunity to stalk the mangroves for a Montes mud crab and not forgetting an island favourite – the delectable whiting might also make it to the menu.
Spend the afternoon on the beach or head out for another dive – the Montes will live up to its reputation as island paradise!

Day Nine - Today we cruise the magnificent Dampier Archipelago. The Archipelago was formed 6000 years ago when coastal plains were flooded by rising sea levels. The area’s rock formations where formed in the Archaean period and are thought to be amongst the oldest on earth. It is a significant place for Indigenous Australians and is well known for rock art and other cultural and ceremonial sites.
It is also a place where the endeavours of tens of thousands of years collide with a multi-billion dollar resource industry! Nearby are rich reserves of natural gas, petroleum and iron ore. And our last opportunity for ‘fun in the sun’ lies in this strange twist of bedfellows – such is the interest in this area that much has been done to preserve the conservation and recreation values of the Archipelago.
Despite proximity to one of Australia’s largest ports we will find stunning prospects for our now familiar West Coast agenda.
Make the most of your last day onboard with nonstop fishing, snorkelling, diving, beachcombing and scenic tender rides!

Day Ten - With a vast and remarkable coast now discovered in style, it's time for your early-morning disembarkation and transfer to Karratha.

These months are normally associated with "the doldrums" - a period of light winds and calm seas. In addition, the TRUE NORTH is fitted with computer controlled motion stabilisers that minimise vessel movement. Passengers can therefore anticipate comfortable conditions when cruising to the Shoals - however observing the normal precautions associated with the prevention of seasickness is always recommended.)

You will marvel at crystal clear waters teaming with life - clouds of fish and corals of every imaginable colour and shape. There will be plenty of opportunity for beach combing on Bedwell Island, relaxed snorkelling in tropical waist deep water or perhaps some "catch and release" lagoon fishing using eco-friendly tackle. Day Two - Start the day with a visit to the Aquarium! Forget the Great Barrier Reef - this is world-class snorkelling at its very best! Even if you’ve never put your head under water before - this is an absolute must. The water is only waist deep however the experience is literally “out of this world”! Brilliantly coloured corals, giant clams and more than 600 of the world’s most beautiful fish species at your fingertips! Don’t forget your underwater camera! After another sumptuous lunch try an introductory SCUBA dive or hand feed maori wrasse and potato cod from TRUE NORTH’s back steps! Then we’ll "crank up the action" with something very unique - high-speed snorkel drifts through the outer reef!

Day Three - Another day in paradise - perhaps an early morning swim and breakfast on the deck before we manoeuvre TRUE NORTH out of the lagoon. Now it’s time to experience the thrill of snorkelling from a 50 metre cruise boat - our captain will “back-up” to within inches of the reef and all you need to do is step off TRUE NORTH’s convenient rear steps! Outer reef snorkelling is a totally different experience - the sheer coral walls will take your breath away! Close encounters with humpback whales, manta rays and sailfish are also on the agenda as we cruise the outer reef. Finish the day with sunset drinks on the beach and one of our famous Island Parties! Then it’s back to the ultimate comfort of TRUE NORTH and another perfect night in Clerke Lagoon - 360° stars reflected in a glassy ocean!

Day Four - Start the day with an early morning stroll on your very own sand cay before we enjoy a leisurely cruise to Mermaid Reef - the Rowley’s northern-most atoll. By now you will be addicted to snorkelling on the outer reef and your wish is our command! We’ll spend the day exploring the outer reef of this remote and untouched wilderness - highlights will include face to face encounters with the curious residents of the Cod Hole and, the mesmerising depths of the Northern Wall. Then all too soon, it’s time for our overnight steam to Broome. Re-live what is guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime as the Rowleys merge into a blazing western sky! Join the crew at the Captain’s Party and then enjoy “the best sleep of your life”.

Day One - Your adventure begins amidst the tropical charm of Darwin. After collection from your hotel, our attentive crew members will escort you onboard True North Adventure Cruises' chartered aircraft for the short flight to Ambon – gateway to the world’s last frontier, West Papua! Steeped in history and the evolutionary birthplace of nutmeg and mace, Banda is at the epicentre of Indonesia’s ‘Spice Islands’ and was a “Holy Grail’ for European, Arab and Chinese spice traders up until the late 1800’s. So valuable in fact were these islands that in 1667, Holland traded New Amsterdam (the quaint island now known as Manhattan) to the British for tiny Run Island – an acquisition that completed their monopoly of Banda nutmeg! Traditional war canoes will lead us into Banda Harbour before we join a guided tour of Banda Neira Island featuring a nutmeg plantation and a fascinating historic museum. Back on-board our guest biologist will introduce the area’s intriguing natural history before you head-off in the expedition boats for a scenic cruise or perhaps this might be your very first opportunity to snorkel and dive on a sunken lava flow. Then join guest and crew alike for sunset drinks in historic Fort Belgica which overlooks Banda Harbour and the still active volcano Gunung Api.

Day Three -It’s time to explore the intriguing Fakfak Coast. Start with a fishing trip to the Bomberai Peninsula or indulge in a scenic cruise in the expedition boats through the hidden lagoons – with one eye in the water and the other to the sky, lookout for hornbills and other Papuan birdlife. And don’t forget your snorkel and your SCUBA tank – the area is also renowned for its aquarium like qualities. Then refresh under the beautiful Mommon Waterfall – where chilling fresh water thunders down lush jungle slopes into the warm waters of the sea. In the afternoon explore Sebakor Bay and its spectacular system of water-filled caves. More snorkelling and diving is also possible but make sure you’re back in time for the chef’s much-lauded wine and cheese appreciation.

Day Four - Wake up and revel in the fact that you’re now in Raja Ampat – the “Four Kings” – a global epicentre of marine biodiversity! You’ll want to maximize every possible minute in the water – snorkelling and diving on these breathtaking reefs with their rainbows of soft corals and huge shoals of fish is a testimony to the efforts of those who protect the SE Misool marine park. These dive and snorkelling sites are some of the most iconic in all of Raja Ampat – marvel at the huge number of sea fans in the Wayilbatan Channel, the massive schools of fish off “Nudi Rock” and the spectacular underwater scenery including a photogenic swim-through at “Boo Windows”. In the afternoon we’ll have a chance to visit the Misool Eco Resort before heading over to Kalig Beach for spectacular sunset drinks!

Day Five - This morning we continue our adventures at Misool Island. The waters surrounding this island teem with fish life, over-sized sea fans and, feature the underwater caverns of Farondi Island. Take a scenic ride around the spectacular Balbulol island formations or enjoy a second dive at “No Contest” (you’ll soon see why it’s so named!) Over lunch we’ll steam into one of the prettiest anchorages in Raja Ampat – the Mesempta Karst Channels. But you’ll have to wait to really soak in the view as we’re off for a unique snorkel/float through the sacred Tomolol cave system – a truly awesome adventure. The Misool Island heli-flight is also not to be missed – you’ll be blown away by the aerial beauty of this region. In the late afternoon join your favourite expedition boat for a ‘drinks and nibbles’ cruise through the beautiful

Day Six - It’s an early start today as the shore parties’ head into Gam Island and trek through the jungle to see the magnificent red bird of paradise. Then it’s back to the ship for breakfast and a short cruise to Cape Kri and its spectacular reef which holds the world record for fish species recorded during a single dive (374 by renowned Australian ichthyologist Dr. Gerry Allen). More diving and snorkelling in the stunning Dampier Strait is on the agenda after lunch or if you prefer, take a seat in the adventure boats as we explore the blue water mangroves and enjoy some afternoon bird watching.

Day Seven -The helicopter is away early this morning revealing the spectacular Fam Group of Islands. The expedition boats will offer scenic cruises around beautiful Penemu Island and the Yeben Islands boast even more opportunity for beachcombing, snorkelling and diving. And after lunch it’s time for a cruise highlight. Alfred Russel Wallace was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist and biologist. He is best known for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection and, he conducted extensive fieldwork on the Malay Archipelago. This afternoon you will slip into the coastal channel that bears his name to discover one of the world’s most unique snorkeling experiences. Surrounding currents converge in the Alfred Russel Wallace Channel to create a ½ mile long ‘drift snorkel’. The current will guide you over stunning orange cup corals, seahorses and clownfish – the vibrant water movement is one of the reasons why the area is so rich in coral and fish life – and all the while you will be surrounded by dense jungle! At the end of the channel the ship’s expedition boats will be waiting – but you may just want to do it all over again! End the day with another thoroughly enjoyable True North “raft up” as the expedition boats cruise through “Hidden Lagoon”.

Day Eight - Wake to the stunning scenery of Wofoh Island – enjoy a breath-taking dive on the black coral forest, snorkel over the lush coral gardens or simply laze on the gorgeous white sand beach (watch out for falling coconuts!). Later in the morning we’ll cruise to the rocky islets of Bougainville Strait and if we’re lucky we can take part in a manta ray convention! Plankton rich currents often attract large numbers of manta rays to Eagle Rock – jump in and have a swim with these gentle giants of the sea! This afternoon we visit the Australian-owned “Atlas South Sea Pearls” pearl farm at Aljui Bay – a chance to learn about the intriguing art of pearl farming and an opportunity to purchase a very authentic reminder of your time in this timeless land! And, we’ll send the fishing parties out in search of the revered mangrove jack – a great fighter and one of the best tasting fish you can catch! For the divers, tonight we’ll offer a night dive on the pearl farm jetty – chock-a-block with all manner of bizarre and beautiful critters ranging from wobbegongs, cockatoo waspfish, hairy ghostpipefish and even Raja Ampat’s endemic walking shark – not to be missed!!

Day Nine & Ten - Gaze upon the mind-blowing “karst beehive” islands of Raja Ampat’s “poster child” - the Wayag Archipelago. Enjoy a snorkel on these gorgeous reefs before we take a cruise on the expedition boats through the lagoon. A helicopter ride over the Wayags is the only way to truly take in the spectacular scenery - you’ll fill your camera’s memory cards within minutes! Another breathtaking day of snorkelling, diving, helicoptering and sightseeing! Plus we’ve got a new activity in mind today as well - get ready for our already-famous “Wayag Beach Party”.

Day Eleven - Private car transfer to Sorong Airport and your chartered flight back to Darwin.

The Whale Sharks of Cenderawasih Bay (7 nights)

Day 1 - Your adventure begins amidst the tropical charm of Darwin. One of our crew members will escort you aboard True North Adventure Cruises' chartered aircraft for your short flight to Sorong – a logistics hub for Indonesia’s thriving eastern oil and gas frontier (On Cruise 2, the arrival port will be Biak). Sorong is also where we will welcome you aboard the magnificent TRUE NORTH. Enjoy a welcome aboard cocktail as we set sail on a journey through the very heart of the ‘Coral Triangle’ – the world’s most bio-diverse marine region. West Papua’s coastal areas encompass more than 275,000km2 of land and sea including the Cenderawasih Bay Marine Park – the largest marine park in Indonesia and, setting for one of the most unique animal encounters on the planet!

Day 2 - Mapia Atoll is a very remote and exquisite coral atoll seldom visited by tourists. Located north of the equator and lying basically in the middle of nowhere, the atoll presents classic opportunity to indulge in nature’s tropical ocean splendour. Vertical walls rise several thousand feet from the ocean floor and come alive with brilliant soft corals, gorgonians, sponges, myriad of tropical fish and a dense population of green and hawksbill turtles. The area also has an enviable reputation for light game fishing! Snorkel, dive and fish to your hearts content!

Day 3 - Today we visit Pulau Num and Pulau Swande. These highly picturesque islands offer another day of spectacular snorkelling, diving, beach-combing and fishing. Take an adventure boat ride through the bays of Pulau Num where locals live in huts stilted over the water and soak-up the stunning tropical scenery at Palau Swande. After lunch our guides will give an informative presentation on what makes Cenderawasih Bay so biologically and culturally unique. At the end of the day stroll along your very own beach, indulge in a refreshing beverage and watch the sun set in paradise!

Day 4 - The Auri Islands offer the most beautiful clear-water snorkelling and diving in Cenderawasih Bay, as well as some of the most beautiful (and uninhabited!) white sand beaches in West Papua. Revel in breathtaking snorkelling and diving on the sheer walls of Tridacna Atoll (named for the plethora of giant clams on the reef) and again at Wild Fish Reef. After lunch, we’ll be treated to an informative presentation on what to expect when we encounter tomorrow’s giants and then everyone will be given the opportunity to enjoy a mid-afternoon heli ride over Auri’s spectacular Karst islands. Later in the day, snorkel over a trio of American WWII fighter jets mysteriously sunk in formation in only a few metres of water. End the day with beach drinks on our very own pristine sand spit as the setting sun turns the Cenderawasih sky to fire.

Days 5 & 6
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the biggest fish in the sea! They feed predominately on plankton (although in Cenderawasih they’ve taken a liking to small baitfish!) and can grow to more than 12 metres in length. There are several places in the world where snorkelers can seek out a close encounter with these gentle giants – however we are pretty sure that nothing compares to a whale shark encounter in Cenderawasih Bay!
Most encounters with whale sharks are fleeting – although they mostly swim slowly, mouths open and gulping buckets of microscopic plankton – they don’t have any trouble cruising past even the most determined snorkeler. But not in Cenderawasih Bay – here whale sharks linger close to the surface for extended periods and the reason for this unusual behaviour is not difficult to appreciate – they have long become accustomed to taking advantage of small fish that spill from the nets of local fishermen. This ‘learnt behaviour’ provides even the most inexperienced snorkeler with a unique opportunity to truly interact with these mammoth fish.
Two days will also afford ample opportunity to explore further afield. The Cenderawasih Marine Park features over 15,000km2 of relatively undisturbed marine and coastal habitat and the extensive coral reefs rank amongst the finest in the world. Cenderawasih is renowned for its diversity of coral reef fish species. Over 1040 species inhabit the park including numerous species of colourful butterfly fish, angelfish, damselfish, parrotfish, rabbitfish and anemone fish. Renowned Australian ichthyologist Dr. Gerald Allen has called Cenderawasih the “Galapagos of the East” in reference to the numerous endemic species of fish and coral and also because local evolution seems to be heading very much on its own trajectory! Species of mollusc are also particularly diverse and four species of turtle are often seen – the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the Pacific ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), and the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys corlacea). Dugong (Dugong dugon), coconut crab (Birgus latro), dolphin and various shark species are often frequently sighted inhabitants.

Day 7- Roon Island is known for its excellent and varied dive sites, beautiful shallow snorkelling reefs, friendly villagers and stunning aerial scenery. Begin the day with either an energising snorkel on the lovely reefs of the Numamuran Strait or a dive at the southern end of Roon – where a Zero fighter lies on a hard coral slope in just 12 metres of water and green turtle, barracuda and surgeonfish are known to swim alongside equally curios divers. After morning tea have another go at snorkelling or diving on the unique underwater geological formations or take a heli flight and enjoy the view from above. In the afternoon join a walk around the village at Yende and discover the local culture – the village church contains a bible that dates back to 1898!
Then all too soon we’ll steam east into the Auri Islands for one last reflective moment with your fellow-adventurers – celebrate an adventure-packed Cenderawasih sojourn with farewell sunset drinks on the beach!

Day 8 - Enjoy breakfast on-board before a private car transfer to Biak Airport and your chartered flight back to Darwin.
